“Revolution 2020 – a story about childhood friends Gopal, Raghav and Aarti who struggle to find success, love and happiness in Varanasi. However, it is not easy to attain these in an unfair society that rewards the corrupt. As Gopal gives in to the system, and Raghav fights it, who will win?”
Social Realism in The Revolution Twenty 20 Novel by Chetan Bhagat.
According to Merriam Webster meaning of social realism:
A theory or practice (as in painting) of using appropriate representation and symbol to express a social or political attitude.
We see Social Realism in The Revolution Twenty 20 Novel through characters Chetan Bhagat was portrayed. This novel is set in Varanasi, Kota. In time duration is 1996 to 2011. Chetan Bhagat very well used flashback techniques to tell the story of Gopal, Raghav and Aarti through Gopal's perspective.
This novel started with a prologue. Here we see social Realism in Gopal through. Gopal tells the story of how he became a powerful person or reputed man in society. How he became an owner of education institutions without passing AIEEE or JEE exams. He tried to pass the exam but he wasn't able to crack it. But also became a young director of Gangatech College.
In the beginning of the novel we can see the conversation of Gopal and Chetan Bhagat himself. Gopal became a young director of Gangatech College. Gopal tells the story about his childhood or education time. When he was studying in Kota, he worked hard to crack exams but wasn't able to crack it. Now he became the only 26 year-old young director of Gangatech College. Gopal character through find the social Realism in the novel.
Gopal used the power of politicians and became a young director of the education institutions. Here we see that he met Chetan Bhagat where he tells his story and when he offered the drinks of Whisky. When he tells their brand and how they old whisk. Gopal took the help of Shukla ji to open new colleges. When we watched the conversation of Gopal with Shuklaji, Gopal asked him, How much ownership in the college do you want? Shuklaji said "whatever you want. College is a trust, not profit there."
Here we see how politicians build education institutions not only for profit but to get a good reputation in society. Here some point we can see that how Shuklaji things that
The bhoomi pujan ceremony marked the beginning of construction. I had run around for three months to obtain the two dozen approvals to make this day possible. The UGC and AICTE in-principle approvals had finally arrived. The final inspections would be conducted when the college was ready to open. For now, we had permission to begin construction.
The only other thing we needed were God's blessings. Fortunately that didn't require a bundle of cash. I held the coconut in my hand and looked around.
In the novel Revolution Twenty 20 we can find social Realism through Gopal characters orany minor characters who became a part of corrupted education systems.
Significance of the title Revolution Twenty 20
Revolution 2020: Love, Corruption, Ambition is a 2011 novel by Chetan Bhagat. Its story is concerned with a love triangle, corruption and a journey of self-discovery. R2020 has addressed the issue of how private coaching institutions exploit aspiring engineering students and how parents put their lifetime's earnings on stake for these classes so that their children can crack engineering exams and change the fortune of the family. While a handful accomplish their dreams, others sink into disaster.
The author stated that the novel is based on the "rampant corruption" apparent in the Indian educational system.
In the title of the novel we can see that the Revolution happens in three angles like love, corruption or ambition. This novel shows the corruption of privatisation. Satirized is for corrupted correcting people. Revolution happens in love means Gopal is in love with Aarti and he became a sacrifice nature for her here we see that. Aarti first fell in love with Gopal for social status then she loved Raghav only for his good for education then she shifted Gopal for their power of richness. Corruption is how Gopal tells that money is happiness or money shows the richness. He offered the old whisky, and he talked about Black Mercedes. It is a symbolism of class or status. Development of malls and India is shining. Gopal say "Life is to be enjoyed. Look at me, I will make four crore this your year, What is the point Enjoy it ?"
we study of Revolution Twenty 20 if it focuses of contemporary point of cooruped education systems or revolution against the corrupted ideas that why we tells that it really revolution twenty 20 but here Chetan Bhagat centralised the love Angel and looked the Revolution Twenty 20. It's is a loose stone of the Chetan Bhagat. That title is not appropriate as a really revolution. It's presented the only centrality of love's perspective. That why title is not appropriate as as we study of corrupted education systems or any social Realism. Chetan Bhagat looked at the centrality of love that became a loose interpretation of text or also down side of the text. It is not well, we not get Revolution as we think at twenty 20 revolution.
Do you think that an opportunity of a good novel is wasted because the story is told from Gopal's perspective? Can it be better if narrated from Raghav or Aarti's perspective? How would it be better if it was narrated from Raghav or Aarti's perspective?
Yes, we think that an opportunity of a good novel is wasted because the story is told from Gopal's perspective. We know that the story tells by Gopal angle. Chetan Bhagat very well used of narration techniques by Gerard Genett's Narratology. Duration we see that two types of that first Narrative time. In this story started with one single day. We see time duration that Gopal meet Chetan Bhagat when his lecture ends taking with him. This time was evening, when both are conversation with each other. And Gopal tells about his story and story end with the morning time. Second that is Discourse time means go to flashback time. Gopal tells his 10 years childhood time, friendship with Arti and Raghav and then he tells about the Yonge day or means education days in Kota. Here we see that single days settings but used of fleshback techniques to tells the story.
Here is questions is that, Can it be better if narrated from Raghav or Aarti's perspective? How would it be better if it was narrated from Raghav or Aarti's perspective. Yes we narrated the Raghav or Aarti's perspective it shows different angles of the story. We see that Raghav was a very intelligent and also education man. He scholar of the study. And he crack the AIEEE or JEE exams and became a teacher. Then he study of journalism and became a journalist to questions about the corruption or questions about authority person. Chetan Bhagat looked this novel is revolution through Raghav characters that way he gained huge meaning of his novel and stand for the classic way of literature but it presented the only of Gopal perspective, it show that how powerful or authorial or richest person control by the education systems and gained the huse reputation in the society.
We we see that Arti's angle we see that she was attracted raghave only for his talent or inteligent of the study. That why if Chetan Bhagat looked a Raghav or Aarti's perspective that is big opportunity to stand of his novel is good position.
