A Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde by R.L Stevenson

 Hello Everyone,

I am Hinaba Sarvaiya. This blog is based on my UG. At that time I was studying Stevenson's most famous Gothic Novella of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. This blog is based on that Novella.

About Author:-

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, and essayist. He is best known for his novels "Treasure Island" and "Kidnapped" and his novella "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." Stevenson's works often explore themes of adventure, identity, and morality and have had a lasting impact on literature.

About Novella:-

"A Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is a novella written by Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1886. The story is set in London in the late 19th century and centers around the respected Dr. Henry Jekyll, who creates a potion that allows him to transform into the evil Mr. Edward Hyde.

At first, Dr. Jekyll believes he has found a way to indulge in his darker desires without damaging his reputation or risking his social standing. However, as he continues to take the potion, he loses control over the transformation and becomes increasingly consumed by his alter ego, Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde is violent, cruel, and abusive, and his behavior causes harm to those around him.

As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are two sides of the same person, and the more he indulges in his dark impulses, the harder it becomes for him to control his transformations. Eventually, Dr. Jekyll's friends and colleagues become aware of the situation and attempt to intervene, but it is too late. Dr. Jekyll's final transformation into Mr. Hyde results in his death, and the story ends with the revelation of a letter in which Dr. Jekyll explains the circumstances leading to his downfall.

The novella explores themes of duality, repression, and the consequences of indulging in one's desires. It is a classic of Gothic literature and has been adapted numerous times for stage and screen.

The message of the Novella:-

The message of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is that repressing one's dark desires can have harmful consequences, and that indulging in those desires can lead to a loss of control and ultimately destruction. The novella also highlights the dangers of scientific experimentation and the unpredictable nature of human behavior. The story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of balancing one's inner desires with societal expectations and the consequences that can result from ignoring that balance.
