The Proposal Short Story by Anton Chekhov.

  Hello Everyone,

I am Hinaba Sarvaiya. This blog is based on my UG syllabus. Here I will explain Anton Chekhov's short story “The Proposal”.

About Author:-

Anton Chekhov was a Russian playwright and short story writer born in 1860. He is considered one of the greatest writers in the history of Russian literature and is known for his realistic and character-driven narratives that explore the complexities of human relationships and social norms. Chekhov passed away in 1904.

About Short Story:-

"The Proposal" is a short story by Anton Chekhov that centers around a wealthy landowner, Stepan Stepanovich Chubukov, and his daughter, Natalya. The story takes place in nineteenth-century Russia.

At the beginning of the story, Ivan Vassiliyitch Lomov, a neighboring landowner, arrives at Chubukov's estate to propose to Natalya. Lomov is nervous and awkward, but he is determined to ask for Natalya's hand in marriage, as he believes that she is the perfect woman for him.

Chubukov is thrilled with the proposal and gives his blessing, but Natalya is not as enthusiastic. She begins to argue with Lomov over a trivial matter, a disputed piece of land, and the argument quickly escalates. As the argument continues, Lomov becomes increasingly agitated and suffers from a heart condition. Natalya tries to help him, but their bickering continues until Lomov collapses on the floor.

Chubukov, thinking that Lomov has died, runs to get a doctor, but Lomov suddenly regains consciousness and demands that the proposal go ahead. Natalya, relieved that Lomov is not dead, agrees to the proposal, and the story ends with the couple discussing their upcoming wedding.

"The Proposal" is a satirical look at the social customs and conventions of nineteenth-century Russian society, particularly the importance of property and status in determining marriage prospects. The story also explores the themes of pride, pettiness, and the absurdity of human interactions.

Theme:-

"The Proposal" is a satirical examination of the social customs and conventions of nineteenth-century Russian society. Chekhov explores themes such as the importance of social status and property, the absurdity of human interactions, and the destructive effects of pride and pettiness. The story portrays the characters' obsession with property and status, which ultimately leads to an argument that almost results in a tragedy. Through the story, Chekhov highlights the absurdity of these societal norms and the negative impact they can have on human relationships. Overall, the story serves as a critique of the superficial and shallow nature of social conventions.

Thank You.
